Symbolism
These symbols—Cross, Fire, and Knight—represent the core aspects of Seifer’s character: his complex nature, his volatile emotions, and his misguided quest for power and honor. Each symbol highlights a different facet of his personality and the internal struggle that drives him throughout the game.
Fire
Fire as a symbol is tied to Seifer’s use of fire-based magic throughout Final Fantasy VIII. Seifer’s most notable attack, Demon Slice, incorporates fire, and his character is often associated with a fiery temper and impulsive nature. Fire also represents Seifer’s burning ambition and his desire to prove himself as strong and powerful, often leading him down a destructive path. The symbol of fire encapsulates both his passion and destruction, as well as his willingness to burn bridges in his pursuit of greatness.
Cross
The Cross symbolizes the dual nature of Seifer's weapon, the Gunblade, which combines both sword and gun. The weapon itself is a cross between traditional melee combat and firearm use, which reflects Seifer’s personality: a mix of power, aggression, and an unconventional approach to combat. The cross can also represent Seifer’s internal conflict and division, as he tries to reconcile his feelings of loyalty and anger, especially toward Squall and the SeeD organization. Additionally, the Cross is connected to knighthood—as Seifer views himself as a knight, a figure of honor and power. The knight symbol reflects his desire to wield strength in the way of a warrior, like the knights of old, while also representing his rivalry with those who challenge his beliefs and his path to greatness.
Knight
Knights are deeply connected to Seifer's self-image and his aspirations. Throughout the game, Seifer views himself as a knight—a protector and a leader, even though his methods and actions often stray from the traditional noble ideals of knighthood. His desire to be like a knight is further symbolized by his rivalry with Squall, whom he sees as an obstacle in his quest for honor and strength. Seifer's sense of pride and his idea of being a knight also speak to his need for recognition and respect, which he desperately seeks throughout the story.
