Legend of Mana, an ancient seal
The legend of Mana tells of a time when the Mana Tree stood at the heart of the world. It was the source of Mana, the energy that gave life to nature and allowed magic to exist. As long as the Mana Tree remained, the world stayed in balance. That balance was broken when people began using Mana for their own ambitions. They built the Mana Fortress, a powerful flying fortress that drew its strength directly from Mana. Instead of protecting the world, Mana was turned into a weapon.
To stop the fortress, the Mana Beast appeared. It exists to protect Mana and restore balance whenever its power is abused. Long ago, the Mana Beast fought against the Mana Fortress in a battle that nearly destroyed the world. In the end, a hero used the Mana Sword to seal the fortress away, and the story became a legend passed down through the generations.
During the events of Secret of Mana, that legend begins to repeat itself. Thanatos revives the Mana Fortress and plans to use its power once again. As the Mana Tree weakens, it reveals the truth about its existence. Each Mana Tree is born from the sacrifice of a woman from the Mana Clan, who gives up her own life so that Mana can continue to exist. The current Mana Tree is Randi's mother.

With the Mana Fortress active again, the Mana Beast returns. It is not the enemy, but the world's last defense against the misuse of Mana. If left alone, it would destroy the fortress just as it did long ago. But this time, the Mana Tree explains that such a battle would also destroy what little Mana is left in the world.
Randi has no choice but to stop the Mana Beast with the Mana Sword. It is a difficult decision because the Mana Beast is only doing what it was created to do. By defeating it, the world is saved, but Mana disappears. It is a bittersweet ending that reminds us that even victory can come with a great sacrifice.

Flammie
One theory I've always liked is that Flammie and the Mana Beast are actually one and the same. The game never confirms this, but it also never fully explains where Flammie comes from or why he has such a close connection to the Pure Land and the Mana Tree. We know that he is a Mana Dragon and that he remains close to the source of Mana throughout the story. That has always made me wonder if there is more to him than the game tells us.
My personal thought is that Flammie may transform into the Mana Beast once the Mana Fortress rises again or when Thanatos unleashes its full power. The Mana Beast only appears when Mana is in serious danger, so it wouldn't seem impossible that Flammie takes on that role when the world needs a protector. After all, his purpose has always been closely tied to Mana.
Of course, there is no official evidence that this is what really happens, and the game leaves it open to interpretation. Still, I like the idea that the friendly dragon who helps the heroes throughout their journey is also the world's final guardian. To me, it gives Flammie's role even more meaning and makes the ending feel even more emotional.
