»Isn't the crystal blue wonderful?«

~The Elder:

The Village Elder, known to the inhabitants of Crysta as the wise and guiding leader, is actually Dark Gaia, the manifestation of evil and the god of the underworld. This dual identity is central to the plot, as it reveals that Ark's journey and the world around him are part of a larger, darker scheme orchestrated by Dark Gaia. The Elder's role is to guide Ark, ostensibly teaching him the important things in life and putting him on the path to resurrect the upper world. However, this guidance is tainted by the Elder's true nature as Dark Gaia, who seeks to bring the revitalized Earth under his control.

Dark Gaia's ultimate goal is to dominate the newly restored world, and Ark is an unwitting pawn in this grand design. The task given to Ark—to resurrect the world—aligns with Dark Gaia's plans, though Ark is unaware of the sinister intent behind it. The Elder's true colors are revealed when he orders Elle to kill someone from the upper world, who turns out to be Ark himself. This twist is a critical moment in the narrative, showing Dark Gaia's willingness to eliminate any threat to his plans, even if it means manipulating those closest to Ark.

By ordering Elle to kill Ark, the Elder puts her in an impossible position, forcing her to choose between her loyalty to him and her love for Ark. This command is a cruel test of Elle's character and highlights Dark Gaia's manipulative and malevolent nature. The Elder's actions ultimately lead to Elle's sacrifice, as she cannot bring herself to harm Ark. Instead, she chooses to disappear into another dimension with Yomi, removing herself from the conflict and protecting Ark in the process.

»So Elle. Kill him!«

~Yomi

Yomi, who resides in the Box of Pandora, becomes Ark's companion after the box is opened. Initially, Yomi appears to be a helpful and somewhat mysterious guide, providing Ark with information and assistance throughout his journey. As the game progresses, Yomi's true nature is gradually revealed. It turns out that Yomi is not just a simple companion but the original form of all living things, and he holds a significant role in the underworld.
Yomi of the underworld is actually in service to Dark Gaia, which complicates his relationship with Ark. Despite traveling with Ark, Yomi remains loyal to Dark Gaia's plan, which includes carrying out the Elder's order to kill Ark. This duality is central to Yomi's character and adds a layer of tension to the narrative, as the player gradually learns of Yomi's hidden agenda. His ultimate goal is to ensure the completion of Dark Gaia's plan, contrasting sharply with Elle's love and loyalty to Ark.

When Elle is ordered to kill Ark, Yomi's loyalty to Dark Gaia pushes him to insist on fulfilling the Elder's command. However, Elle's love for Ark prevents her from carrying out the task. In a climactic moment, Elle sacrifices herself, disappearing into another dimension with Yomi, thereby thwarting his efforts to harm Ark. This act highlights the contrast between Yomi's loyalty to Dark Gaia and Elle's love for Ark, ultimately leading to a tragic but necessary resolution where Elle saves Ark from the fate Yomi and the Elder had planned for him.

»That's who you love Ark. You don't think of me at all...«

~Mei-Lin:

Mei-Lin is introduced as a lonely and somewhat tragic character living in the ghost town of Luran. Her backstory is marked by loss, as she lost her parents and is left with only her dog Turbo and her grandfather Ma-Jo for companionship. She possesses the ability to create illusions, a power that further isolates her from others. This ability also makes her an important ally for Ark, as she assists him multiple times throughout the game.
Mei-Lin develops strong feelings for Ark, hoping that he will return her affection. However, Ark's heart belongs to Elle, and this unrequited love becomes a source of pain and frustration for Mei-Lin. When Ark does not reciprocate her feelings, Mei-Lin's loneliness and longing manifest in a tantrum, straining their friendship. Her inability to win Ark's love leads to resentment, particularly towards Elle, whom she blames for Ark's lack of interest in her.

Although Mei-Lin and Elle never meet, Mei-Lin harbors an intense grudge against Elle. This animosity stems from her belief that Elle is the reason Ark cannot love her. Mei-Lin's feelings highlight the emotional complexity of the relationships in Terranigma, adding depth to her character and underscoring the theme of unfulfilled desires.
Her role in the story serves as a counterpoint to Elle's selfless love for Ark. While Elle is willing to sacrifice herself to protect Ark, Mei-Lin's love is marked by jealousy and resentment, illustrating the different ways in which love can manifest.
